Directly edit table data?

Here is a most basic of questions from a past user of Enterprise Manager where I used to simply connect, hit the database, open the data in table view and voila, edit, add or delete table data when such a thing was needed in a pinch.

I've downloaded and installed MS SQL Server Management Studio and worked with the table structure (columns, field types, etc) but cannot for the life of me figure out how to get my hands on the actual data as I used to so simply!

Help! What am I missing! I searched here as well and found entries noting how to build an application to do such a thing, but surely that functionality hadn't been lost, has it?

alyoung *at* bluemarble *dot* net

Just try right-clicking on the desired table and select "Open Table".|||Oh.My.Gosh. How dumb am I!? If only all life's questions could be answered so easily!

Direct printing

Hi there,
I know there has been a lot of discussions and irritations that RS does not
offer direct printing, instead the user has to export to pdf(or another
format) and then open that and print the report from there, but I would like
to know if it something that Microsoft is working on and if so when it may be
available.
Surely with the amount of interest shown in the printing it will be soon?
ThanksCurrently we are looking at including client side printing in the next
version of SQL. We have heard the cries of pain and are also looking at the
possibility of including it our next service pack. As of this time though we
have made no formal announcement on what will or won't be included in the
next SP.

reports and doing great things but figured when someone wants to view it they
surely wouldn't want to print and therefor left that part out . . . . . and
now after all this time still haven't included it? Ok, just wanted to make
sure.
Come on guys your product kicks @.ss, please can we have a way of printing
our reports without having to export them, open them and then print them.
Hopefully someone will come up with a reletively easy way to print soon.

Direct print in RS 2000 no longer works in RS 2005 --what's the secret?

Hi all,
I have a Windows Forms application in VS 2005 that displays reports inside a
System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser. The user can print using the print icon
within the browser window, but I also have a big Print button on the form
that prints directly. Now, with RS 2000, my print button worked fine, I
directed the ActiveX control to directly print like this:
rsBrowser.Navigate(ReportServicesPath & SpecifiedReportURL &
"&rs%3aCommand=Get&rc%3aGetImage=8.00.1038.00RSClientPrint.html")
But, I've now upgraded to SQL 2005 and RS 2005, and this code doesn't work,
although printing via the print icon still works fine. What is the
equivalent of the above code for RS 2005'
The above code puts an error into the browser window:
>>
Reporting Services Error
----
a.. An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for
more details. (rsInternalError) Get Online Help
a.. Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. Parameter
name: offset
<<
I looked at the error log, but it is impenetrable to me.
Thanks,
C17Hello C17,
I understand that you want to use the URL access to print the report.
In Reporting Services 2005, the RC parameter prefix is changed and you
could not use the GetImage now.
I would like to suggest you use the ReportViewer control.
Here is the article for your reference:

viewer(VS.80).aspx
Hope this helps.

Dinamic subreports

Hi there,
I want to create a "big report" including a lot of subreports.. but I want
the user can select the reports to show in the "big report" from a list of
existing reports (generally graphs reports). Each user of the application
will have his "big report" configurated as he want, and the settings will be
stored on a table.
Any suggestions?
I have to assign to each subreport the reportname property, the parameters
(I previously have all Parameters in "big report" assigned from an aspx),
and the visibility property, right? but when and where do I write this code?
thank's a lot for any suggestion

Dimension Security

Hi,

I have Created Dimension Security by restricting the user to see only his information whoever login to the system by creating a new role. It is working fine by checking the cubes by changing the role through change user option but when the cube was integrate it to any Analysis services reporting tool(Excel, Proclarity) inspite of the roles mentioned it displays the records of all the user.

Can anyone please help me out in this situation?

guessing wildy...

if it can identify the user, they get a restricted view

if it cannot identify the user, they see everything

maybe you need to switch off some kind of anonymous access

maybe it cannot identify the user when they are coming in via one of these tools? is it possible to display the username somewhere so you can at least dis/prove this?

|||

Hi adolf,

Thanks for the reply.....

Hence we are getting the analysis services cubes to any of this tools by accessing the server directly and any of the processing in cube can be done only in server and the tool is used to only show the data. so i hope there is nothing to do with the reporting tool regarding security. something to be done with in the cube

Dimension Data Security - User Access To Only Certain Members

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone else has had to deal with this scenario (I'm sure many of you have?!?)

"Projects" are assigned to a user at various level of an organisation, the underlying security is always [Project ID]. If I belong to Business Centre X - I will have 1,200 [Project ID] returned by the security component.

Is it possible to limit the projects available to a user via filters / MDX to the 1,200? So when Joe Bloggs access some report or wants to perform some digging arounf in ProClarity, etc the data is secured without being able to turn off the underlying security filter... easy in a OLTP system...

Trying to get some organisations to understand the concept of "roles" that allow trusted employee's to perform analytics across company data is a little difficult. What comes to mind is "are you getting the whole picture"? ~;0)

Hope it makes sense.

Many thanks, Ian.

Sounds like you're looking for a dynamic dimension security solution, where access to dimension members (in this case, Projects?) is controlled, based on the identity of the user. Is the mapping of users to projects available as OLAP data, or is the list of projects for a user fetched from an external system (in which case, an Analysis Services Stored Procedure may be needed)?

Here are some links to information on dynamic dimension security in Analysis Services:

Deepak, many thanks for your quick reponse... I'll be off reading then... I posted this question as there is some much info on security!!!

"Analysis Services Stored Procedure" sounds interesting... I'll have to investigate

Cheers

dijkstras algoritm problem

I want to make it possible that I can see the path from one user to another and via whom the route went:

I want to pass the startnode and the endnode and then retreive the route between them.
In case I go from 5 to 15 (see table below), I want to have the following returned:
5-6-15
5-7-15

In case I go from 5 to 18 I want to have returned:

5-6-15-9-18
5-7-15-9-18

always up to a maximum distance of 6 steps.

I have the following table definition
tblFriends

FriendCode int

this table contains content like:

56511576561261561171575915918115116126136156157159189

Digital Signature

Hi I have created a Client/Server application. The Client connects remotely to the SQL 2005 server using thier unique user name and password.

The client application allows the users to update a form.

I need to add to the database a digital signature for that user when they update that form. This is intended to be a replacement for a physical signature that would appear on a paper form.

For such an application, most of the signing logic should be at the client level. I'm not sure what is your question and how it relates to SQL Server security - please clarify.

Thanks
Laurentiu

difficult SQL select statement

Hi all,

i have a table containing 24 columns, i would like to generate a new table by input the program gets from the user concurning of the columns he would like to see.

sound like an easy "select ? from table", but the thing is that how can the function know how to get a different number of variables, i mean, one time the user will want to see one column, and afterwards he will want to see 10 columns, is there a solution except generating 24 functions?.

i looked in all kinds of SQL tutorials and nothing came up so i came here, tnx for your help!.

Alon.

public string GenerateSqlSelect(string[] columnNames){

return "SELECT "+String.Join(", ",columnNames)+" FROM MyTable";

}

|||You could use params keyword to specify that your function has a variable number of arguments.

It is common practice that you always get all columns from table, but user can control which column want to see, for example in a grid or listview. So he will at first see all columns but it will be able to remove some of them. That configuration can be saved and used for next application start.

Different Font size when browsing and printing a report ?

Hi all,

Is it possible to setup different font size when a user is browsing or printing a report?

I have a lot of data to print on a report and i need tu use a font size of 7pt which is fine for printing but when the user is looking at the report on the browser a font size of 7pt is a bit too small and the bold doesn't work.

Tia

You can use a parameter (Web, Print) which would specify the font size 7, 12, and set the font property on the textbox to use the =Parameters!FontSize.Value + 'pt' expression.

I don't think the report can tell whether it's being printed or not internally.

cheers,

Andrwe

Thanks Andrew,

I was hoping to find a way to do this without prompting the user beforehand.

Different behaviors when writing Database file into the SD Memory card.

Hi All,

I have seen some different behaviors when I am writing SQL Server compact edition Database file into SD Memory card or any user removable storage media.

The following Steps for reproducing these behaviors.

1. Set your database location is in the SD Memory card.

2. Create a database and establish session.

3. Writing first record into the database is done

4. Remove your SD card manually from the system

5. Try to write a Second record into the database

6. You will get the error from this "SqlCeWriteRecordProps" API call - This is fine.

7. Put your SD card back into the system.

8. Writing Second record again into the database is done - This is fine.

So far the behaviors are good after that

9. Remove your SD card manually from the system again

10. Try to write a Third record into the database

11. You will suppose to get the error from this "SqlCeWriteRecordProps" API call but you won’t get that error – I don’t know why?

12. Then Try to write a Forth record into the database

13. You won't get any error from the API call "SqlCeWriteRecordProps" and return status is success.

14. Now put your SD card back into the system.

15. Then write Fifth record but this time its writing record Third, Fourth and Fifth into the database.

Note:

I am clearing (means Free) my record structure everything after calling this function "SqlCeWriteRecordProps". So I don’t know why its wring Third, fourth and fifth record into the database.

Please Let me know your feedback.

Thanks,

Rajendran

This must be related to at what point of time the changes are flushed to SD card. It could be that during 2nd record write there is an attempt to flush the changes and the disk missing error. The next attempt to write records happens only during 5th write.

By default the flush interval is set to 10 seconds. This can be varied through connection string.

[If your question is answered, please mark it as answered]

-Thanks
