Difficulty Installing SQL Reporting Services on SBS 2003 Premium

I am trying to run reporting services on a SBS 2003 Premium server and have
been runninng into a lot of issues.
I have installed the SQL Reporting Services Components on the server and the
Visual Studio .Net components on my workstation. The goal behind installing
the components in the specified locations include: report authoring on my
workstation and finished reports available to all via the server.
The issues I have encountered include:
1) SQL Reporting Services activation error due to a conflict with
Sharepoint. I have removed Sharepoint from the server as outlined in KB
829114. After completion of the Sharepoint removal, I reinstalled SQL
Reporting Services and Reporting Services SP2 and was again informed that
activation was not possible due to a conflict with Sharepoint. How do I
work around this problem?
2) When accessing SQL Reporting Services from Visual Studio .Net on my
workstation, I can open an existing project but I can't view content within
the data sources tab. When trying to do so I get an error that states: "A
connection cannot be made to the database. Set and test the connection
string. Can't generate the SSPI context. How do I resolve this problem?
3) When creating a new SQL Reporting Services project using the Report
Wizard, the Shared Data Source field is blank and unavailable. Likewise,
attempts to access shared data sources using the Server Explorer window
result in the system prompting for a login when I try to select a listed in
the tree under my server. I am unable to login using our available network
or SQL User IDs.
My server is running SBS 2003 SP1 which includes SQL 2000 SP4. My
workstation is a member of the domain for which the server is the PDC.
Is my topology realistic and can my problems resolved or should I relocate
all components to the server? Even if located on the server, I will still
encounter the activation problem and need a work around.
Thanks for your help!Hello RS,
A few weeks ago I wanted to order SQL Server Reporting Services on a CD vom
Microsoft Direct. At that occasion, they told me that Reporting Services
simply are not supported on SBS. Seems like MS wants you to by the full SQL
Server product if you want to use RS. But please re-check that with your
contacts.
Greetings,
Stefan Falk|||Hi Stefan,
Sehr interesant. I initially posted my issue in the SBS forum and was
instructed by Microsoft to post in the reporting services forum. No mention
was made of non-compatability and I have noticed from the SBS forum that
other SBS users are running reporting services. You should be able to get a
copy of the software from one of the US Microsoft resellers.
Take care,
RS

Difficulty installing reporting services server

G'day,
I am trying to install reporting services (development version) on a
Windows 2000 Server, and the setup will not allow me to install the
server components as it says "Internet Information Services 5.0 (IIS)
or later is either not installed, or it is configured in a way that is
incompatible with a Reporting Services installation."
Below is the rsstp2.log which I managed to find.
Reading it, it appears to be saying that the IWAM_machineName account
does "Not exist or [is] not enable[d]". (It also says the VS is not
installed, which is okay, as I don't want to install the designer
components, only the server).
The machine has SQL, IIS, and all the service packs that I think it
requires, and when I check the account IWAM_A-External _does_ exist,
and is _not_ disabled (i.e. it is enabled).
Does anyone know what security settings the account needs, or any
reason why it is telling me the account does not exist?
Also, does it matter what the password for the IWAM_machineName
account is? (Note: the password is the same in the metabase and for
the account).
Can anyone provide more detail on exactly what checks are performed
for the RSACCOUNTS prerequisite?
Thanks in advance.

Kavi -- did you just get the same on-screen message, which is rather
generic, or did you actually get the same prerequisite fail in your
log file (i.e. the '<Prerequisite
Name="AreRSAccountsValidInstalled"').
Can anyone provide more detail on what is checked for this
pre-requisite, as the account looks fine.

Have you made any progress? I am having the same issue with IIS and
IUSR/IWAM apparently configured correctly.
I am installing on a cluster and am using domain\IUSR... type accounts,
although the local accounts still exist. I am drawing a blank on all my
sources.

DATADIR=3DC:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$HipMSDE\Data\

Since I was unable to perform this install using the command line:
"Setup.exe /settings Setup.ini"
because it kept telling me the path was not valid, I double clicked on
Setup.exe and it took all the settings in Setup.ini anyway.
In attempting to upgrade to SP3a I attempted to supply the following
settings in an ini file.
[Options]
ALLOWXDBCHAINING=3D0
BLANKSAPWD=3D1
COLLATION=3DLatin1_General_CI_AS
DATADIR=3DC:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$HipMSDE\Data\

TARGETDIR=3DC:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$HipMSDE\Binn\
UPGRADE=3D1 UPGRADEUSER=3D"XXXXUpgr" UPGRADEPWD=3D"XXXXUpgr"
Using the same command line but this time for the SP3a setup file, an
installation does not occur. Trying the same double click too does not
work. Instead I get is the following instructions:

These windows installer instructions and the wealth of SP3a
documentation only leads me to more confusion. I've spent two days
trying to meticulously decypher and make sense of it. I'm lost! Can
someone please help sort this out for me?
BTW I have successfully updated to SP3a for both of my SQL Server 2000
database installations. It's this MSDE that I am having difficulty
undersatnding

MSDE 2000A is already updated at sp3a level and you do not need to upgrade
it..
if you are experimenting troubles with the ini file, you can directly
provide those parameters to the setup.exe bootstrap installer in the form
c:\..\>setup.exe ALLOWXDBCHAINING=0 COLLATION="Latin1_General_CI_AS"
DATADIR="C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$HipMSDE\Data\"
DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=1 INSTANCENAME="HipMSDE" SAPWD="XXXX"
SECURITYMODE=SQL TARGETDIR="C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL$HipMSDE\Binn\"
all on the same line
you provide BLANKSAPWD=1 and SAPWD="XXXX" parameters, and those should be
mutual exclusive, so please try removing BLANKSAPWD=1

> UPGRADE=1 UPGRADEUSER="XXXXUpgr" UPGRADEPWD="XXXXUpgr"
are not required as you do not have to upgrade...
please always add the
/L*v "c:\MsdeLog.txt"
parameter too in order to verbose log all the installation process, that
will result in an about 2mb txt log file you can inspect, in case of
problems, for
RETURN VALUE 3
entries, that indicate problems and, about 10/20 lines before or after each
entry a more descriptive (often cryptic) explanation of the problem is
reported

Differential and Transaction Log BU Maintenance Plan SP2

I had a maintenance plan which does a full backup weekly, differential backup daily, and transaction log every hour. After installing SP2, the maintenance plan designer will not allow me to set up my differential. I select the database to backup in the designer, then when I go back, it didn't take and it tells me I need to specify which database. I found the following in the "Whats New" section of SP2.

The Backup Database maintenance plan task prohibits the ability to mistakenly set the option to create differential and transaction log backups for system databases.

So, have I been wrong all this time for doing Full, Differential, and Transaction log backups(even though that plan was recommended in a Sql Server 2005 book). Is it now an either or? (you either do differential or transaction log, not both). Because transaction logs take longer to restore, and you "HAVE" to do a transaction log backup or the log will grow to rediculous size, meaning you can only do differential on "Simple Mode" databases? Thanks,

Jason

Transaction log backup should control the virtual size of transaction log and that should give you more time for point-in-time recovery than the differential backups, in this case the SP2 readme is right on the subject.

Also you might try to keep the transaction log backup schedule frequently to take care of such slowness of restoring the tlog.

|||Alright, I'll take your word for it. No more Full, Differential, and Transaction Log backups. Just Full and Transaction Log. Thanks.

Different regional settings discovered in SQL cluster nodes!

We have advertantly failed to verify correct regional settings on both (Win2
003) Cluster nodes prior to installing SQL Server 2000 Ent Ed. SQL Server is
installed in an Active Passive config with System Databases installed to a
shared disk (Drive G Nod
e 1 has US English regional setings (date = mm/dd/yyyy) and US English input
Locale
Node 2 has Australian English regional (date=dd/mm/yyyy) and US English inpu
t locale
Our (mission critical production) database was detached from its old server
(AustralianEnglish regional and US English Locale) and moved to this clust
er 2 days ago. Testing and failovers work fine and the solution went live. W
e have only just discovered
the date discrapency. As the current date is (day & month) is still below 13
, nothing has blown up yet but we are 2 days away from the 13th!
The sysadmins are content to change the regional settings on node 1 to Engli
sh Australian and leave it like that. They failed-over the SQLService over t
o the second node and have scanned the systems databases and tables for date
s showing abnormal (future)
dates and found nothing. They believe there will not be a problem in simply
changing over Node 1's date settings to English Aust.
Sorry for the long note but I need to describe this as clearly as possible.
I am concerned that we have overlooked something. Can anyone tell me if it i
s safe to just change the system regional settings to English Australian? Wi
ll SQL server cope with the
date format change past 13Feb 13/2/2004 in AustEnglish format (dd/mm/yyyy)?
Should we rebuild the node with the correct regional settings and reinstall
SQL server on it? (In order to do this, SQL Server will need to be uninstall
ed from both nodes and the
master db deleted as the master db was created via node 1 US English to star
t with).
Thanks.
NRAs long as you have changed regional settings and you do not have code that
uses set dateformat otherwise this willbe ok. No datetime issues will be exp
erienced thereafter.|||Thanks for your reply, Olu. We did the change but found that SQLServer still
had problems on that node, and this was after we also fixed up the user pro
files to ensure the regional settings were correctly set.
We are attempting tonight to uninstall SQL reinstall, this time from the sec
ond node which was initially set with EngAust regional settings. We'll know
soon if that worked.
NR|||NR can U please keep me posted . . and what errors did you get on the node
after U changed regional settings'
