TranLogs Backups every hour
I am trying to restore to a point in time, specifically to the time
right after my last Differentail backup. I am using Ent Manager for
this. I have restored the Full with no recovery and then I select just
the last Differential Backup for restore and I get the message
Cannot apply the backup on device 'd:\abcd\diff' to database 'TEST'
restore database is terminated abnormally
Is there something wrong with my restore process. This is a qa
environment that I am testing this on. I have added a lot of data to
the database and then manual run the diffential job. Now I am trying
to restore to this point but I keep getting this error. Any help would
be appreciated. Please check the backup file you are using.
Thanks
Ajay Rengunthwar|||Ajay, Not sure what you mean exactly. I was able to restore my last
full backup. Both with and without recovery. I am just having trouble
restoring the differentials backup after that.

Differential data backup sql2k
Hi, all
I am trying to do the data differential databackup daily and full backup
during the weekend.
Log shipping remain the same as usual.
There is anything that I should be aware of before I chnage the backup
method.
It takes too long to have full data backup every night.
Thanks,
Diff backup of the source database does not affect log shipping in any way. So, just make sure you
have thought about disaster recovery, number of backup generations and that you understand the
concept of database, diff and transaction log backups (which are pretty simple).

Differential backups of sql2k w/BackupExec huge
I am running Sql2k to house my 7GB database. I ran a full backup this
morning and saw amount of data backed up was 7GB. I then decided to try
doing a differential backup to see if it might be a good mid-day solution.
Normally I would do several log backups during the day but because the
application does several unpredictable bulk inserts of external data daily,
my understanding is that this breaks the transaction log sequence and as
such log backup won't work.
Anyway, when I did this differential backup I was very surprised to find
that the 2 users on my system were able to make 2.35GB of changes in an hour
and a half. I know, that isn't necessarily what it means when you get such a
huge diff backup, but what I want to know is why could this be happening and
what options are available to me for mid-day backups. I ran another diff
backup an hour later and 2.4 GB was backed up.
My hunch is that something is causing checkpoints that are trunc'ing the log
such as the db or log auto-growing. To counter these possiblities, I
increased the size of the DB to 10GB and the log file is 500MB just to be
safe.
If I am right and something is causing checkpoints, how can I find out what
it is? I didn't write the app, I am just stuck supporting it.
Mike
<><Whether or not and when checkpoints are occurring does not affect
differential backups... Only data which has changed since the last complete
backup... so those users have changed mucho data...

No, that is not the case. Assuming of course, you are not running in
Simple recovery mode that is. And that you bulk-load operations does
not include BACKUP LOG db WITH NO_LOG.

Different SQL mail
my config is SQL2000, outlook xp
now i use xp_sendmail to see email from SQL2k
how can i use different mail profiles for different database?
or i can control it at script level?
i have searched google for this and seems it is feasible.
grateful if you could give me some hints.
by the way, i am going to upgrade SQL2000 to SQL2005.
Thanks a lot.
tonyHi
xp_startmail will take a different MAPI profile. You may want to use XPSMTP
instead where the source can be specified http://www.sqldev.net/xp/xpsmtp.htm

tonyIf you upgrade to 2005, consider using Database Mail instead. See sp_send_dbmail in the 2005
documentation.
As for 2000, I believe that you optionally can use different profiles, although I've never tried it.
See the documentation for xp_startmail.

Differences in MS SQL7 and MS SQL2000
I am having difficulty convincing my management to upgrade from our existing MS SQL7 Database to MS SQL2K. I know that SQL2K offers enhanced performance and ease of use but am unable to find any white paper or documentation online that shows me the advantage of SQL2K over our current older version. Is anyone here facing the same problem as me? If any one has any documentation or hyperlinks to point me in the correct place, just post here or drop me an e-mail at chanmunyew@.msn.com to help...any help at all is greatly appreciated!! thanks guys!More links than you can shake a stick at, hope these help:
