differentials backups

Do differential backups have to be backed up into the same
file/device as the original backup? or can I make a
seperate file/device'not necessarily, you can create it on the seperate device as well.

Differential Backup

How do i create differential backup maintenance plan ?
All examples i saw is using GUI and backup device manually.TIA
You will need to write your own script and job for
differential backups. The maintenance plans don't support
differential backups.
