Directions on how to install SQL 2000 not as Windows admin

Hmmm, typically you need to have local administrative rights to perform
application installs. Perhaps you could negiotiate, or create (depending on
your position on this ;), a local account that has administrative rights,
use that for the install, then disable the account once SQL Server is
installed.
Steve|||I appreciate the response, but it wasn't helpful.
I am certain Microsoft has produced a guide to setting up a SQL Server 2000
with an account that is not SysAdmin. I want a link to that guide.
If there isn't a guide, then someone should surely write one.

does not have Windows administrator rights, or is your question how to
install SQL Server so that the Windows user who installed SQL Server
cannot connect to the new SQL Server as SQL Server system administrator,
or is you question something about post-installation SQL Server setup?
I don't think you can do either of the first two, simply because the
installation makes changes to both Windows and SQL Server that should
not be allowed by someone without administrator privileges.
In any case, it would help if you could be more specific about whether
"account" means Windows account, SQL Server account (login), or
something else, whether SysAdmin refers to the SQL Server system
administrator role or something else, and what you mean by "setting up".

Service Account is something besides the Local System or an Admin Account".
If that's the case, create an account you want the service to run with and
then specify that account
during the install. If you've already installed, then go into Enterprise Ma
nager and select the Security Tab. Type in the account info there and click
on OK. SQL with then apply the correct security permissions to that accoun
t. If you do it in the Ser
vices portion of computer manager, the security permissions won't be applied
and the service will not start.

Difficulty installing reporting services server
I am trying to install reporting services (development version) on a
Windows 2000 Server, and the setup will not allow me to install the
server components as it says "Internet Information Services 5.0 (IIS)
or later is either not installed, or it is configured in a way that is
incompatible with a Reporting Services installation."
Below is the rsstp2.log which I managed to find.
Reading it, it appears to be saying that the IWAM_machineName account
does "Not exist or [is] not enable[d]". (It also says the VS is not
installed, which is okay, as I don't want to install the designer
components, only the server).
The machine has SQL, IIS, and all the service packs that I think it
requires, and when I check the account IWAM_A-External _does_ exist,
and is _not_ disabled (i.e. it is enabled).
Does anyone know what security settings the account needs, or any
reason why it is telling me the account does not exist?
Also, does it matter what the password for the IWAM_machineName
account is? (Note: the password is the same in the metabase and for
the account).
Can anyone provide more detail on exactly what checks are performed
for the RSACCOUNTS prerequisite?
Thanks in advance.

Kavi -- did you just get the same on-screen message, which is rather
generic, or did you actually get the same prerequisite fail in your
log file (i.e. the '<Prerequisite
Name="AreRSAccountsValidInstalled"').
Can anyone provide more detail on what is checked for this
pre-requisite, as the account looks fine.

Different SQL server 2005 Editions from the same Installation CD?!
Hi
I have the SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition CD and have succesfully installed this on my desktop.
When I install this on my Laptop the version is 2000(print @.@.version) is only Desktop version (2gb db limit!)....
Any ideas on why the full enterprise edition is not installing on the laptop?!!
Version on my Desktop:
MICROSOFT SQL SERVER 2005-9.00.1399.06 (INTEL X86)
OCT 14 2005 00.33.37
1988-2005 microsoft corp
enterprise edition on windows NT 5.2 (build 3790-service pack)
Version on my laptop:
MICROSOFT SQL SERVER 2000-8.00.2039(INTEL X86)
May 14 2005 23:18:38
Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation
desktop engine on windows NT 5.1 (build 2600: service pack 2)
The Laptop spec is:
Intel 1.66Ghz, 1 Gb Ram, 50 Gb HDD, Windows XP SP2
The Desktop spec is:
Intel 2.8 Ghz Dual Core, 2 Gb Ram, 320 Gb HDD, Windows XP SP2
Both SQL Server 2005 versions are installed from the same CD so why would there be a difference?
I understand that you cannot have Enterprise edition on XP but it has installed on the desktop, not the laptop?
Thanks in advance!
EE does not support Windows XP as a OS. Could it be that you have developer edition installed ?

Based on the information you provided, your laptop has Windows XP SP2. SQL Server enterprise edition requires a server OS and will not install on Windows XP, which is a client OS. Thus, you can not install it on your laptop.
Look closely at your @.@.version information from your desktop. It indicates that your desktop computer has Windows 5.2, which is Windows 2003 Server, NOT Windows XP. Windows 2003 Server will support an installation of SQL Server 2005 enterprise edition. Thus, I would expect you to be able to install SQL Server 2005 enterprise edition on your desktop, but not on your laptop.
I do not understand the statement... "Both SQL Server 2005 versions are installed from the same CD so why would there be a difference?"
Looking at the @.@.version information on your desktop and laptop indicate that SQL 2005 is install on your desktop, but SQL 2000 is install on your laptop. I do not see any indication that SQL 2005 is install on the laptop.

Different link
explicitly say you can install the tools on a client box without a
license if you have a server license. You can infer that from what it
says, but I would really like to find it spelled out.
Thanks,
Jim
What link are you talking about? Since you changed the topic of the
conversation, we have no idea which thread you're replying in.

|||Jim is referring to license requirements for having the SQL client tools
installed.
To be honest Jim, the original response given to you stated that the client
tools can be installed freely, providing a SQL server license is purchased.
I.e. You wouldnt need the tools if you didnt have a SQL server after all!

Different language instances on same server
instances, for instance, one in english and the other one
in Spanish, in the same server?
We are having a problem in our central server, with a
especific software which runs correctly only in the SQL
server spanish version.
For sure, all collation and language settings have been
tested in the english version with no result.
Thanks in advanceGustavo,
Yes, given you can even install SQL7 and SQL2000 on the same
server - they don't share much at all !
But there are license issues / costs:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/faq.asp
"SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition includes the ability to run multiple instances of SQL Server 2000 on a
single computer. Multiple instances are used by organizations that have several applications running on a
server, but want them to run in isolation so that any problem in one instance will not affect the other
instances.
With SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition, you can install multiple instances of SQL Server on the same computer
without having additional licenses. Although SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition will technically support
multiple instances, each instance requires a separate license. "

Different folder locations during setup
Hello there,
I need to install SQL 2005 in one drive on my computer, and data folders in another drive. Can anyone tell me how this can b done during setup please?
Thanks in advance.
Hemant
During setup, one of the screens that verifies the installation will have an [Advanced] button on it. Click the [Advanced] button, and you will be given the opportunity to change installation locations.Different Execution Plans -> Same Query, Same Database, Different SQL Server Install
Background: Same database, restored from development to production.
Indexes up to date. Service Pack 3 on Production. Originally RTM on Development, upgraded to Sp4, Execution Plan remained the same.
The query itself is not my concern, but that there is such a wide difference in performance between 2 boxes. Is there a setting on the Production that might be slowing it down? My system seems to have selected a worktable, is there a way I can turn that off to mimic the server?
I want to optimize the queries to perform best on the Production server, which is hard to do if my server's chosing different execution plans.
Is there anyway to determine why the Production machine would choose one plan vs. the development machine?
Development:
|--Nested Loops(Inner Join, OUTER REFERENCES:([CLIENT].[CONSUMER_UUID]))
|--Index Spool(SEEK:([CLIENT].[FIRST_NAME]=.[F
.[LAST_NAME]))
| |--Clustered Index Scan(OBJECT:([SAMS2K_ND_STATE].[dbo].[CL
|--Clustered Index Seek(OBJECT:([SAMS2K_ND_STATE].[dbo].[CO
Production:
|--Nested Loops(Inner Join, OUTER REFERENCES:([CLIENT].[CONSUMER_UUID]))
|--Clustered Index Scan(OBJECT:([SAMS2K_ND_STATE].[dbo].[CL.[FIRST_
.[LAST_NAME]))
|--Clustered Index Seek(OBJECT:([SAMS2K_ND_STATE].[dbo].[CO
The following is the output of the statistics on my Local Development
Server:
Table 'CONSUMER'. Scan count 0, logical reads 0, physical reads 0, read-ahead reads 0.
Table 'Worktable'. Scan count 0, logical reads 0, physical reads 0, read-ahead reads 0.
Table 'CLIENT'. Scan count 0, logical reads 0, physical reads 0, read-ahead reads 0.
SQL Server Execution Times:
CPU time = 3187 ms, elapsed time = 1877 ms.
This is the output of the statistics on the Production environment:
Table 'CONSUMER'. Scan count 88857, logical reads 274907, physical reads 0, read-ahead reads 0.
Table 'CLIENT'. Scan count 41708, logical reads 48294390, physical reads 0, read-ahead reads 0.
SQL Server Execution Times:
CPU time = 690218 ms, elapsed time = 225583 ms.
Look for DBCC SHOW_STATISTICS in the BOL.
|||
Try and rebuild the Indexes on Production Database
DBCC DBREINDEX
|||The databases were identical, both restored from the same backup resources on the same day.
Thank you for your responses, and I will attempt both, but I don't believe that the statistics or indexes would be different if drawn from the same resource?
|||This is not due to statistics or indexes. It should be identical when you restore from a backup of a database. There are other factors that can affect the query plan - number of processors, memory, maxdop settings etc. Additionally you should try to keep the service pack level the same between the machines. The main reason is that you could get different plans due to changes in service pack and some could be bugs also. So it is best to compare servers that are on the same service pack too. If you are seeing worse performance than SP3 for the same query/machine configuration then it is most probably a bug. I would encourage you to create a bug using the MSDN Product Feedback Center with the repro steps. Also, please use SET STATISTICS PROFILE to check the actual query plan/execution times.|||It should indeed be identical when you restore but a colleague here has experienced some strange behavior after a restore several times. He claims that after an update of the statistics everything functioned as expected. Now I can't say I fully support this statement as I have no personal experience with this.
We tend to keep our service packs identical to production, I think this should be a rule for every development environment.
You should update your weblog Uma, you still have to answer my NOLOCK question :-)
|||Thanks for your reply,
The production is running SP3a. I tested the query on development environment at both RTM and SP4 (not realizing the production was still only at SP3) and I did get the same plans between RTM and SP4.
The production machine is Windows 2003 server dual processor,Intel Xeon 3.6ghz, with 3.5 GB Memory, it is part of a cluster server.
The development machine is Windows XP dual processor, Intel Pentium 4 2.6ghz, with 1 GB Memory.
I will compare the profiles in the am.

Differences between SQL Server 2005 on Windows 2000 or W2K3
I know that the SQL Server 2005 Enterprise System Requirements said that
it's possible to install SQL Server 2005 on Windows 2000 Server.
But I'd like to know if there's known issues of features not working well on
W2K Server ?
Thanks for your help.
Regards
jeffHi Jeff
I have not tried this, as W2K3 has significantly improved I/O it would be
worthwhile upgrading.
